All I can say is that we met our objective -- we had fun! Who cares who wins or looses. (Shhh – I do!)
We had a great turn out and I appreciate everyone that made time for this great ACU event. Kudos to Team Havana. Team Spirit indeed beat Team Power!
We started with a prayer by Father Nelson and then we went out and played 9 innings of heartfelt, competitive, blood and sweat softball. We had some falls, some injuries, some great catches, good hits and a little bit of “Billy Martin” controversies (nothing that a little hug did not fix). We truly had a great time. The rain threatened but it went away despite the flooded dugouts from the rain the night before. (Folks – I know that softball is usually 7 innings but why cut the fun short.)

Many have asked when is the next game and that we should not wait a year to get this going again. I agree! So, I have decided to skip November and December with all of the activities/holidays that are coming up and set something up in mid-January. The weather will be great and we can revive the rivalry. In addition to Team Havana and Team Esto Vir, I will also call on all of you to get your wives and girlfriends ready for a Co-Ed softball game AFTER the match-up. I will then set up another game that will be Co-Ed towards the end of January (probably two weeks after the Team Havana and Team Esto Vir match up).
Is everyone that played on Saturday, 10/29 still in? Would like to keep the same core players. As new people come in, I will add them to the teams accordingly. If we have more than 10 players per team, we would have to switch positions each inning. EVERYONE THAT COMES WILL PLAY FOR SURE.

Mark your calendars (dates are tentative):
Saturday, January 14, 2012 – Team Esto Vir (Visitor) vs Team Havana (Home)
Saturday, January 28, 2012 – Co-Ed game
Place: TBD (may be Tropical Park again)

Rules for next time: We will have a total of 10 players on the field, meaning we will have 4 outfielders only. If there are more than 10 people per team, someone will have to wait in the dugout for the next inning to play.
The $5 donation is for field reservations (they are not free) and water supplies that I’ll bring.
Thanks to all again for making this a great ACU gathering. Thanks also to all of you for all the THANK YOUs. It was a pleasure setting this up.
Please pass this info to whoever needs to see it or players that were not on the original e‑mail list.
Un abrazo a todos!

PRE-GAME:

ACU-Miami had a great practice event on Saturday. 15 of you showed up and thank you for that. We did just that, practice. Many had not played in years and it was a great turn out for a simple practice. We had young and old there and everyone got to hit. The kids too: Jaimito Prada, Priscilla Leon and Felipe Cueto were all there enjoying the time and playing with us. Frank Salas did a great job pitching and hitting. Everyone had fun which is the point.

Practice Game Highlights:

We had muscle’s stretched, knees flair up, missed balls and some good catches as well. Many strike outs, many balls and definitely some good hits. We had several change of pitchers, some better than others. The trash talking was non-stop of course. Some players got hit with the pitching and both dugouts came out swinging. Just kidding!

At the end, we played a mini, 2 inning game. Final score: 4 to 2. For the losing team, I have never seen a bunch of babies and sour losers in my life. Again, just kidding!

The Rivalry:

For those that did not show up, IT’S ON!!!!! The ones that did show up for practice say they will beat the “newbies” this coming Saturday by a margin of 23 to 2. I will not say who it is but they were serious. So get your gloves oiled, your bats tarred and fetch that Ben-Gay out of the back of the closet. It is set, it is done, and it is Game Day!

Game quotes heard:

  • Manny “Mays” Anton Sr.“Wait until those “other” people show up, I will show them!”
  • Ralph “Mad Dog” Viego “I will hit a homerun every time I am to the plate.”
  • Carlos “Hog” Barcia “No ball will EVER get passed me.”
  • Efrain “The Man” Zabala “When I was 17, I used to…(fill in the blank)”
  • Carlos “I can catch, really” Muniz “On the day of the game, I will stare down the conspirators that did not show up today.”
  • JJ “Fire” Wood - “I can out hit, out run and out catch anyone specially those people that did not come today.”
  • Willie “Hitman” Cueto “Where is Marty, I need water now.”

So as you can see, some hot buttons were pressed. Be careful, there is fire in the air. For the newbies this Saturday, be careful.

The Real Game: (The ACU Miami tradition re-starts)

Saturday, October 29, 12:30 PM, Field 4, Tropical Park (same as the practice field). We need you to show up by 12:30 PM to warm-up as we have a limited time for the field and if everyone shows up at 1:30 or 2 PM, there is no way to enjoy the game or have enough time. We do not want to get pushed out of the field. Please be there by 12:30 PM for warm ups and team preparation. I will have teams made up by the time you show up.

GAME TIME: 1:15 PM

There is only real rule for the game – TO HAVE FUN and enjoy the time with friends and family!!!

Please bring your own refreshments. Bathrooms are close by and there is a water fountain nearby as well but it is not cold and it trickles.

Please bring extra gloves and bats for who has them. We need them desperately. (If the extra glove is pink, not sure what to tell you. Hint, hint…you know who you are.)

If you confirmed initially, it is important to know if you WILL NOT make it so I can have the proper count. As of right now, I have 23 people confirmed for the Game. If you want to bring someone (friend, relative, etc) please do. No issues. Just let me know. Everyone will play and there might be people that have to leave early. Even if you told me at the practice that you were not coming, please send me another e-mail to let me know. I would like to set the teams before the game and the only way to do that is if everyone that will go (or not) lets me know. Please do that asap. I cannot really recall who told me they would not show up. Help me please as I do not have the time to call everyone and e-mail is the best policy. I will be out of town traveling this week so e-mail will just really be the only way. Thank you for that.

Post Game Celebration – Immediately following the game

Duffy’s Tavern – 57th Avenue and a few blocks north of Coral Way.

Thanks to all that showed up on Saturday for the Practice. Looking forward to seeing you this coming Saturday for the Real Game
