The Board of Directors ("Consejo General") met the weekend of June 3-5 at the Miami Headquarters to review the status of the ACU and determine what actions should be taken to move the ACU forward.

There were 22 participants from the ACU chapters in Atlanta, Miami, NJ/NY, San Juan, and Washington. Father Pedro Suárez, SJ, agrupado, President of Belén and Superior of the Miami Jesuits participated in the meeting on Saturday. Father Pedro challenged us to reflect and plan for the ACU in the spirit of St. Ignatius meditation on the "3 Binarios". We can, like:

  • Binario #1, decide to continue "as is"— do nothing; or, like
  • Binario #2, we can decide to make cosmetic changes; or, like
  • Binario #3, in the spirit of St. Ignatius, the ACU can seek to discern the Holy Spirit’s guidance for the ACU and make the necessary changes to effectively execute this guidance.

After reaffirming that the ACU is a sodality (Congregacion Mariana) with a Jesuit director, the Consejo reflected, discussed and decided that our four major issues were, in order of priority:

  1. More effective and immediate use of the Residencia Jesús Maestro (RJM).
  2. Increase recruitment of new "congregantes".
  3. Maintain the "Uno solo el pensar y el sentir" unity of spirit among all ACU members.
  4. Formalize the formation of "Agrupados" in both the spirit of the ACU and understanding the basics of the Catholic Faith.

There are two residents currently at RJM, another recently joined the Residence for the summer, and we expect to add one more resident in the days to come. Every applicant is evaluated to insure that each will meet the spirit and rules for the residence.

We want also to encourage the participation of those agrupados whom are not active in the ACU today.

We spent Saturday afternoon working on the first item and Sunday morning on the second and we identified specific actions to address them. We also reviewed a few other operational issues and decided:

  1. To celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the foundation of the ACU in conjunction with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception this coming December.
  2. Continue having a once-a-year weekend meeting of the Consejo in addition to the one held annually in December.
  3. Continue the effort to get more members of the ACU to participate and pay their dues.
  4. On the importance of having all members of the ACU participate in the efforts identified in this meeting. We ask every chapter to provide a summary of the minutes to their membership and engage them in moving the ACU forward.
