From my earliest memories, I have had a yearning for God. At every major threshold of life, I wondered if God was calling me to the priesthood. I saw it; I felt it and I was afraid of it. I didn’t want to believe it and part of me couldn’t believe. I didn’t want to be different; I wanted everything that everybody else wanted: women, power, possessions and pleasures. But I could never give myself over to these things totally. Deep down I knew I was destined for something else. I was torn between two worlds.

In 1994 I graduated from Boston College Law School and began working in Miami with the Public Defenders Office. I felt good about the fact that was standing up for the poor and disenfranchised those whom the world loves to hate. Even though this is a truly Christian attitude, I knew there was something more, something more purely Christian for me. Within a few months of moving to Miami, I met Marty Perez and Willie Cueto at St. Patrick’s on Miami Beach. Marty and I both volunteered to serve the Mass. During the Mass, I noticed Marty kept looking at me. I began to be suspicious of him (we were on Miami Beach after all). After Mass, Willie and Marty invited me to the ACU. I was looking to grow in the practice of the faith, so I agreed, not sure what I was getting myself into. At the ACU, I was very impressed at the manly and orthodox character that was obviously present. I saw the Congregantes as real men, truly living for the Lord Jesus and His Catholic Church. It showed me that a living faith and a successful professional life were compatible. In fact, the world needed faithful Catholics in every first position of society. During that time, I fell in love with a beautiful Italian woman. Eventually, it became clear that she wasn’t for me. Even after seeing the beauty and the power of the faithful Catholic life of the Agrupados, I still felt a yearning in my heart for something more, something I couldn’t exactly explain and something I didn’t really want to admit.

In an effort to run away from God and His calling, I took a job in my hometown in Massachusetts in 1997. It was a very difficult time for me because I was avoiding the truth, but still couldn’t turn away from it completely. Within a few years, I became fairly successfully in the law career, politics and socially. I never felt settled though. I never felt right. Finally, I realized that I had to face the question of a religious vocation.

I knew I was looking for something that was manly and orthodox – someplace where I could go all the way, holding nothing back. I wasn’t looking for ease or comfort, and certainly not compromise. If I were to leave everything I had slowly and painfully built up, it was going to be for something pure, something beautiful, something powerful. When I first visited the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal I said to myself, “these guys got guts.” They were living in the ghetto of the Bronx and were going all the way for Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church. I was reluctant but inside I new this was my place. Prompted by 9/11 and my mother’s diagnosis of cancer – time is short and there is too much evil in the world to me (and us) to pursue anything but the best, I joined the community in 2002. The greatest difficulty has been to consistently accept the truth that God’s personal, tender love for me is real. For me it has always been a matter of accepting His love and His truth. On May 14, 2011, I will be ordained a Priest of Jesus Christ at St. Patrick’s’ Cathedral New York City. Finally, I have begun to truly accept God’s love. In this way, I can spread that love to the whole world – a world that so desperately needs it.

NYC, May‐14‐2011 Se Ha Ordenado Sacerdote el Agrupado Giuseppe Maria (Padre Giuseppe):

Auténtico Agrupado de origen italiano, quien hace algunos años fuera abogado en nuestra ciudad de Miami cuando tras una invitación de Mariano Pérez a la ACU en 1994, conociera a su director espiritual. En aquel entonces, nuestro queridísimo Padre Llorente; empezó a descubrir en él una vocación distinta a su profesión de abogado que lo llevó a hacerse hermano Franciscano de la Nueva Renovación CFR (Franciscan Frey of the New Renewal) en la ciudad de Nueva York. El director y fundador de esta orden es el Rev. Padre Benedict Groeschel CFR. Animado por las mociones e inspiraciones que siempre logró el Espíritu Santo a través del Padre Llorente en los Ejercicios Espirituales, como él mismo mencionaba en una homilía que tuve la oportunidad de escuchar estando aún Brother Giuseppe en su monasterio del Bronx en NY, recordando las palabras: “Adelante, ánimo, Esto Vir!” No se detuvo ahí y emprendió el nuevo camino de su vida religiosa que lo llevó a ordenarse sacerdote Franciscano el sábado 14 de mayo de 2011 en la catedral de San Patricio en NYC. Sencillo, alegre, con un espíritu siempre animado, llevando una vida santa, de constante oración y de servicio a los demás, la medalla de la Agrupación siempre en su pecho, al igual que su manifestación constante de cariño entrañable a la ACU y sus hermanos agrupados; así lo vivimos en su ordenación los que pudimos acompañarlo en aquel viaje pleno de Gracia para nuestra Iglesia, pero sobre todo para la Agrupación.

Fue un fin de semana inolvidable empezando el viernes al caer la tarde, en el cual, por asuntos profesionales y como otra de tantas gracias recibidas a quienes asistimos, porque no nos costó nada, nos quedamos en tradicional hotel Waldorf‐Astoria en Park Avenue, cerca de la Catedral. Además de compartir y disfrutar en fraternidad, Emilio Falero nos tuvo caminando por toda la ciudad hasta la media noche del viernes. Desde el barrio chino, hasta Broadway, Times Square, Central Park, etc. para luego regresar al hotel. Y a pesar de semejantes lujos y comodidades, no pudimos dormir con la serenata de ronquidos de nuestro talentoso guía, pero prometimos portarnos bien y ofrecerlo como sacrificio por el nuevo sacerdote agrupado. Aunque hay que reconocer al César lo que es del César, Falero nos deleitó con su derroche de cultura como guía turístico en los rincones de la ciudad. Sus recuentos de los santos americanos, la historia del Padre Félix Varela en NYC cuando pasamos por la iglesia de La Transfiguración y su ayuda reconciliando la violencia religiosa de la época. Sus explicaciones históricas de los diferentes monumentos que pudimos visitar recrearon la historia de muchos años y nos enriquecieron mucho.

El sábado en un abrazo agrupacional lleno de gozo nos pudimos unir con Padre Giuseppe: Miguelito Massens (hijo), Alfonso Ledó, Carlotica y su hija Teresita, Emilio, Mariano, y yo. Después de la ordenación sacerdotal, fuimos invitados al monasterio a una pequeña celebración, empezando con la adoración al Santísimo Sacramento. Qué alegría ver en esa capilla un mar de jóvenes frailes barbudos de la orden CFR, también monjas jóvenes. Esto nos dio mucha consolación del futuro de la Iglesia al ver tantas vocaciones jóvenes. Aunque con un poco de prisa, porque debíamos regresar al aeropuerto, saliendo de la capilla cerramos la puerta y nos encontramos cara a cara con el Rev. Padre Groeschel CFR, fundador de la orden y ya un poco viejo. Con una mirada cariñosa nos dijo: “and you are?”, tomando su mano me presenté agachando la cabeza ante semejante santo en vida. Mariano agregó que veníamos desde Miami y éramos congregantes de la ACU. El Rev. Padre, en quien ya son notable los achaques de salud y cansancio, se sonrió y dijo en español: “oh! mi querido amigo el Padre Llorente, por favor llévenle saludos de mi parte . . . del viejo cansado”. Nos dio su bendición para seguir nuestro camino. Nos miramos y dijimos: más vale que los saludos a P. Llorente sean porque P. Groeschel no se ha enterado que P. Amando falleció y no sea una premonición a cumplirse de inmediato. Así que hermano agrupado, si estás leyendo este artículo, es porque llegamos todos bien de regreso a Miami. (Foto del Rev. P. Oremos por las vocaciones sacerdotales, que por cierto nos anima y alegra el hecho de ver tantas nuevas vocaciones presentes en Nueva York, tanto de hombres como mujeres religiosas consagradas; y oremos por nuestros sacerdotes, especialmente ahora por Padre Giuseppe para que el Señor siempre lo asista y lo guíe en su vida sacerdotal, e inspire nuevas vocaciones religiosas, que incluso podrían ser nuestros hijos o hijas si así es la voluntad del Señor.
